Comic Book Review: The Ultimates Volume 1

The Ultimates: Volume 1

For those of you unaware, The Ultimates are a team in the Marvel Universe.  They are equivalent to The Avengers.  The difference?  The Ultimates take place in the Ultimate comic universe (along with Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Wolverine).  Another difference is...Nick Fury is African American.

With the new movie, The Avengers, coming out in two days I thought this review was appropriate!  I very much enjoyed this story.  It was very interesting.  It is the start of The Ultimates and gives a little bit of a background check on Captain America.  The story starts in World War two.  It shows Captain America doing what he does best, which is being a complete bad-ass.  He beats up a few Nazi's here and there and then he even sacrifices himself by jumping onto a rocket and trying to detonate it on his own!  Afterwards, everyone (including his best pal Bucky and fiancee Gail) assume him to be dead.  But in reality he got frozen in some ice.

Fifty some years later, S.H.I.E.L.D hires Bruce Banner and Hank Pym.  Nick Fury is counting on both of these men to remake the super soldier serum so they can make another Captain America.  Their research, however, comes to an end when they find The Cap and revive him.  After they acquired Captain America to join their team, they try to get Thor!  Unfortunately, Thor has other plans. Nick Fury and Banner go to Thor's location and tries to talk to him, but Thor refuses.  They eventually get him to join with Tony Stark's help by just inviting him to dinner and thus, Thor and Stark became good buddies!

A few twists and turns happen in the story!  The team begins to fall apart a bit when Hank Pym and his wife, Jane Pym get into a huge fight!  When I say fight...I mean FIGHT!  It ended with The Wasp hiding from her husband under a desk and getting bit by millions of ants that are controlled by Hank Pym!  This causes Hank to move out of their home and Jane to go to a hospital.  Captain America gets furious over this and he finds Hank Pym in a bar and beats him up until his last breath!

Another fallout between the team came when Bruce Banner finds out that his ex-girlfriend (that's right, Bruce.  Your ex.  Get over it!) is out to dinner with Freddie Prinze Jr.  What a celebrity Betty Ross is, huh?  This causes Banner to get furious and decided to mix his Hulk DNA with some super soldier serum that he has been developing!  Hulk then proceeds to...SMASH! Hulk angry! Hulk don't like Freddie Prinze Jr to steal Hulk's girlfriend!

It takes the entire Ultimates team to take him down!  Hulk ends up killing nearly 300 (and counting) people in the process!

The first time they behave like a team is when Nick Fury learns that Captain America's old foe from the forties, Herr Kleiser, returns!  As it turns out.. he is a shape shifting alien that can take the form of a life form!  That is how World War Two started!  Now, I personally do not like alien invasion because I just feel like that is lazy writing...but The Ultimates pulled it off!  Captain America fights Kleiser and gets beat up pretty badly.  That's when they decide to do the only logical thing...push Bruce Banner out of a flying air plane.  When he hits the ground he turns into Hulk and tries to smash Captain America!  But luckily, Captain America can think quickly on his feet and convinced The Hulk that, in Captain America's words "That naked guy over there tried to get with Betty."  Hulk (still thinking Betty is his girlfriend) attacks Kleiser.  During all of this Hulk screams stuff like "Hulk will rip naked guy's jaw!" "Hulk will touch naked guy like naked guy touched Bettty."  A little disturbing...but funny.

RATING:

ART:  I felt like the art was very good.  I thought the shadows and shading were expertly done and the muscles tones were pretty good too....9

STORY:  Very interesting.  I enjoyed reading about how these heroes got together in the first place and loved watching how much trouble they had cooperating with one another.  Although, I feel like the alien invasion angle was a bit boring and lazy writing...7.5

DIALOGUE:  The conversations they had were pretty hysterical.  From Nick Fury saying how he feels like Samuel L. Jackson should play him in a movie to The Hulk saying how horny he is...9.5

Entertaining:  I was entertained by this story arc.  There are thirteen issues and I read all of them in about a day and a half..so yeah...8

PICK UP AGAIN WORTHY:  It was an enjoyable story, but I don't think it made me want to go back and read it again, probably not even in a few years...7

OVERALL RATING:
8.2
