Cullination Royalty: Cyrus Part 2

PART 2: WHY SHOULD YOU LOVE THEM?

An evil masochistic criminal leader intent on destroying the world as we know it? Yeah, Cyrus deserves Cullination's crown. Welcome to Part 2 of Cyrus' Cullination Royalty!

Throughout Cyrus' appearances in the Generation 4 games of the Pokemon universe, he comes within seconds of harnessing the power to eradicate our world.  He commands a fleet of thousands of foot soldiers in Team Galactic, and hints are left to the player (via his "home" in Sunnyshore City) that Cyrus endured a harsh childhood. This discovery somewhat explains his maniacal behavior.

Upon further inspection, Cyrus isn't exactly evil, he's just a misunderstood, psychologically impaired, power hungry maniac who merely aims to create a perfect world. The only catch is that he figures the best way to do this is to kill everyone but himself with legendary dragons, opening a portal to an alternate dimension, and wiping everything off the face of the Earth.

Say what you want about Cyrus and his "problems" but he is one smart cookie to be able to pull all of this off. If it weren't for the player and his meddling Pokemon, he would have gotten away with it, too.

When it comes down to it though, Cyrus is no pushover. The player confronts him several times during the game, a few of which result in battles. In Diamond and Pearl, there are two battles against Cyrus, while in Platinum, there are three, the last of which is one of the toughest fights in the game.

For the most part, the evolved forms of the Pokemon used by his underlings are thrown at the player. However, during the final fight in Platinum, Cyrus brings the usual Honchkrow, Weavile, and Crobat along with a new Gyarados and Houndoom. All of his Pokemon are high leveled with diverse movepools. Even with three of his Pokemon having weaknesses to Electric, Gyarados can wipe the floor with Electric-types with its brutal Earthquake. This is no easy fight, and rightfully so. There's no way a boy should give up on his dreams, right?

The other Pokemon villains not only never have come as close as Cyrus in terms of the execution of their plans, but they also don't match up in terms of their plans' grandeur. Sure, Team Rocket acts like the Mafia and bullies people around, and Team Magma and Aqua bicker within a ceaseless argument between land and sea. Team Galactic, however, attempts to rule the UNIVERSE.

Team Aqua and Magma awaken one legendary Pokemon each in Kyogre and Groudon, while Team Rocket awakens nothing but an inner greed for wealth and an epitomized definition for failure. Cyrus awakens SIX legendary Pokemon in Azelf, Uxie, Mesprit, Giratina, Palkia, and Dialga. I think we know who wins that battle!

That's a wrap for Part 2 of Cyrus' Royalty...come back on Friday as we get into a game for Cyrus and his week of royalty continues!
